Most recently, while out and about in Boca Raton, Florida, I chanced upon the newly opened gallery of Tomasz Rut in Royal Palm Place. I was greeted by beautiful-bodied women, heroically muscled men and horses depicted with such beauty, grace and detail that I felt as if I was in the private room of a Renaissance aristocrat like a Medici or Lombard, or in the summer home of the Pope. As I explored the gallery a bit further, I discovered that Tomasz' work is indeed in the Vatican permanent collection following a meeting with Pope Benedict as well as in the private collection of the Sultan of Brunei...

Throughout the history of art, many artists have been extremely skillful at conjuring up a a wholly fantastic dream world of captivating creatures and nostalgic pastorals occupied by lovely nymphs and strange composites of man and beast. Inspired by the mythology of the Greeks and Romans, their images of idealized female goddesses and heroic athletes evoke the legends of the past and a bucolic existence of timeless reverie. Tomasz Rut is also inspired by this mythology and by its completely imagined world that becomes incredibly real under the painter’s magical brush…

To encounter Tomasz Rut’s monumental tableau – his centaurs, cupids, beribboned naiads and Olympian youths – is to remember things long buried.
But isn’t all this artistic apostasy? Haven’t these motifs been anathema since Courbet’s – circa 1860 – exhortation: “Show me and angel and I’ll paint you one.”
Such questions are laden with irony. For decades skeptics looked at Picasso’s cubes, Mondrian’s squares, Matta’s sqiggles, Pollock’s drips and Lichtenstein’s Ben-Day dots and similarly asked, “Is this art?” Lately, artists have “gone as far as they can go” so the pendulum swings back…
